Built in the 15th century, under the stony mountains of Tembien, Mariam Hibuiito (The Hidden Mary) is hidden. The tiny village of Adiha, accessible only by a 4X4 vehicle, takes a good forty-minute walk. Unlike many other Tigrai rock-hewn churches, this structure’s carvers had plenty of time to spend embellishing their exterior. To say the least, at Medhane Alem Addi Kesho, they cut out four free-standing columns reminiscent of those. There are six non-free columns inside the church. There is also an unfinished dome-making effort on the ceiling. The church is 13 meters deep and 9 meters wide.
